I’m working on learning the difference between intuition and impulse right now.

Quotes and thoughts:
There is no “I,” just a group of subconscious subselves vying to break the surface of consciousness. But it’s an illusion “we” find it impossible to abandon. A nice lessening of the illusion, even if “we” never abandon it, might help this world in general and “ourselves” in particular, though. — Steve Snyder

“Only two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not so sure about the former.” — Albert Einstein

Aim high: Moon the stars and if you fall too short, your bum still gets some fresh air. -- Steve Snyder

Early childhood stress can change genes

At least in mice, where it's now been demonstrated:

"Leaps of faith" in life

This topic is sparked by a discussion with someone in the chat room last night.

Yes, I would love to leap out of the box(es) and into something new. The primary box I am thinking of is my current job in particular and career path in general. Part of what holds me back is fear and anxiety, I'm sure. Part is the flip side of that same coin, valuing security.

Part is, I don't know how. I say that not just on a "technical" side but a larger psychological side. I don't think I'm alone, there. Peopl… Continue

Fall hiking in West Texas

Most of the colors in the pictures in the link are from big-tooth maples, which are "relict" trees in West Texas. I'll upload a couple here too.

Well that works. I haven't seen one of those in BC - we use fish guts. Kidding.

Hey Socrates- did your prodding work regarding those pesky neighbours? If you're handy, I suggest mounting a microphone to your wall, attaching it to a speaker, and then echo their irritating noise right back at them... at ear splitting volume! Not only is it good for laughs but it may actually be patentable. Patrick

Lafayette, California is a bosky little suburb about 25 miles due east of San Francisco. It started as a Pony Express stop, and when the University of California was founded at Berkeley, it became a cottage community for many of the faculty, who couldn' t afford the Maybeck houses in Berkeley's tony "hillside club" district. (We bettah off -- those folks are sitting right on top of the Hayward Fault.)

It's Lafayette, California, about twenty-five miles east of San Francisco. BTW, I liked your restatement of the Serenity Prayer -- have been thinking lately about what Aldous Huxley had to say about human temperament, and how two-thirds of us just aren't capable of the kind of sudden, dramatic religious conversion that the noisier one-third insist upon as an absolute necessity. Not to put the knock on what works for those for whom it works; but the outcome can get pretty miserable for the rest of us. It turns out Huxley was well acquainted with Bill Wilson; too bad they never got past that particular disconnect.

Nice equipment. But I know the saw doesn't make the carpenter. Your composition is excellent; your sober self really shows its beauty. Do you have a Flickr page where I can see more of your great work? I shoot with a NikonD50 (and will upgrade when I am able). - I'm new to this group so I'll post some photos soon.
