Recognizing when and how much support/help we need is a very large part in staying sober I think. It doesn't have to be a struggle. It is not an issue of "surrender" so much as it is just acceptance. For me, I find it easier to just approach it f...

Kudos on your very long period of sobriety! It really is GROSS! Especially today and Monday. "They" took a holiday that actually is my favorite and tried to ruin it with rampant commercialism. Black Friday and Cyber Monday - just so disgusting.

Such numbers as I have seen (although of questionable "solidity") suggest a success rate not much better, if better at all, than that of a control group whose members attempt to recover on their own. Fortunately, being an innately wary sort of pe...

The concept of "deflation at depth" is a wholesale borrowing from Buchman's Oxford Groups. The technique applies to only about a third of human beings, by temperament; it can do serious damage to the other two-thirds of us -- and it does. (From th...

Local Cyclist relapses

My son has raced professionally with Chad Gerlach, he is local here in my town and so this especially hit home.

It caused be a bit of sadness this morning but also is a reminder and another good reason not to drink.

Chad was also featured on the A&E series "Intervention."

What I find most disheartning and yet not completely unexpected are some of the comments from the newspaper's readers.

THERE IS NO RECOVERY. THERE IS NO RELAPSE.

THERE IS NO RECOVERY. THERE IS NO RELAPSE.

Did that get your attention? It must have if you are reading this. :)

There is no disease. At least not in the sense we normally perceive disease. You are not powerless. There is no reason to be "in recovery." Try throwing out the word "recovery." Maybe replace it with something else...how about "discovery."

Throw out the word "alcoholic" and replace it with "sobrieitist."

It's about perception. It's all about how you look at it. I was in the chatro… Continue

Hey Bart, hope all's good with you.

Just to say a thank you really. I've been reading old posts over the past month or so and read a reply you posted to Adorabelle's blog - where you talked about deflection and "STOP THOUGHT" : http://www.livestrong.com/article/14703-thought-stopping-in-recovery/ ) - in case anyone else is interested.

This wasn't something I'd come across. I've not done a lot of reading yet about things, although I'm starting too. It sounded when I first read it like, "such a simple idea surely can't work?", but I've been working on it for a couple of weeks now and god it really works so well I'm finding!

Not just for drinking thoughts either. Bye bye to all those wee small hours making anxious lists in my head-type thoughts about work or, "let's lie here replaying past humiliations in my head - that'll pass the time productively at this hour" and other such ridiculous things that I'm prone to.

I've ordered the Philip Tate book you mentioned now too so will let you know how I get on with that.

Anyway, just to say thank you.

Best wishes,

Fran

Bart, I just love your pics. That's so great that Emma and Stuart are doxies! How old? I should have known from the intelligence, warmth, uniqueness and sensitivity of your comments that you're a dachshund person. :-)
I was once engaged to a mini named Vito. He would stand there, wordlessly, looking at me with those soulful eyes, one paw raised, and I knew he was looking into my soul and understanding me like no one before ever had. When he passed away, I fostered with dachshund rescue in Chicago. For the last 9 years, I've been doing in-home dog boarding for small and senior dogs, so I still have my doxie visitors to look forward to.
